    Zimbabwe Today:

  • hyper-inflation virtually unseen in the world before (clocked by a Forbes Magazine columnist Dec. 4, 2008 at an incredible 80 billion percent per month!)
  • a widespread cholera epidemic has infected more than 60,000 and killed more than 3,100 since Aug. 2008 (as of Feb. 12, 2009 SOURCE: World Health Organization)
  • massive food shortages
  • unemployment that exceeds 80 percent
  • the world’s fastest shrinking economy
  • the world’s shortest life expectancy
  • an AIDS infection rate of nearly 25%

President Robert Mugabe is roundly blamed for these problems, yet he clings to power and stubbornly denies that his policies are the source of his nation’s troubles.

Why should we pray for such a leader? Isn’t he a despot and a thug responsible for the deaths of many and the economic ruin of a once prosperous land? How do we overcome our visceral reaction of disgust and condemnation?

Scripture calls us to not only pray for “kings and all those in authority,” (1 Tim 2:2), but also to pray “lifting up holy hands, without wrath and dissension” (verse 8). In truth, it is very hard for us to deny our fleshly response of revulsion. That’s why we must surrender ourselves to the Holy Spirit in prayer, confessing, “Lord, I can’t do this, but You can. Cleanse me of unrighteousness. Give me holy hands free of wrath and dissension.”

World leaders, including those from Africa, condemn President Mugabe. Zimbabwe is subject to economic sanctions and Pres. Mugabe faces heavy pressure to sign a power-sharing agreement with his leading political opponent. He has responded to these attacks and pressure with defiance, denying the claims of his critics while blaming the West, particularly Britain.

None of the world’s approaches to President Mugabe are made with holy hands, free of wrath and dissension. Is it possible that he would respond differently to God’s approach? Can you write these simple words on the back of a postcard?:

Dear President Mugabe:
God loves you. I am praying for you.

In the year 2000, nearly 3,000 pastors in the Philippines wrote letters to their newly elected President, confessing and repenting of their anger at his election over a Christian. The President, who was very vocal in his disdain for the church, became a born-again believer within a month. Read details of the story here.

What if thousands of Christians, perhaps tens of thousands, flooded President Mugabe’s mailbox with expressions of God’s love for him?

Dear President Mugabe:
God loves you. He will never drive away those who come to Him. I am praying for you and your countrymen.

When was the last time that anyone told President Mugabe that he is loved by God? Can such simple words penetrate a man’s heart and spirit? Will you write to him today? Will you encourage others to do so?

Dear President Mugabe:
May you know the peace of God in your heart. He will never leave you or forsake you. My family and I are praying for you.

Can Christians swamp President Mugabe’s mailbox with an outpouring of love? Can a life be changed by a few drops of anointed ink on paper? Can the course of a nation’s history be altered if we take a simple, tangible step to share God’s love?

Dear President Mugabe:
God promises us that if we draw near to Him, He will draw near to us. His perfect love is waiting for you now. I am praying for you and your country.
